Square Enix unveiled to the world the 7-minute trailer of Final Fantasy XIII at the Tokyo Game Show. Obviously, the language was in Japanese so it was hard to make anything of the story. All I could make out from the dialogue was "SERAHHHHH!!” After much anticipation, the trailer was released with English subs which hinted the tiniest daylight on the premise.
First things first, the graphics are smooth with no visible jaggies on the characters’ faces. But then again I'm basing this on the movie shown during the trailer. The gameplay mechanics involved bouts of action similar to Crisis Core on the PSP and the usual Paper-Rock-Scissors-RPG mechanics. At least that's what it looked like.
The scene that really caught our attention is at the 2:17 mark. Good to know that while exploring the vast environment the background is active and alive. The scene reminds you of a Star Wars movie.
You'll also notice that the summon gods have been revamped and now transform into different forms before attacking the enemy. For example, fire god Ifrit transforms into a car and uses its afterburners to singe the enemy. I wonder if the characters' limit breaks involve some type of transformation also.
Back to the story, Serah seems to be an important character in the game. She is constantly protected but suddenly faints or dies at the end of the trailer. Whatever Square Enix has in store for fans it seems promising. I've never been a fan of RPG's but Final Fantasy was always the exception.
Square Enix never fails to provide people with ideas for cosplay costumes that in turn become a teenage boy’s coitus fantasy.
Final Fantasy XIII is set for release on December 17, 2009 in Japan.
