American Perspective: Mexican and American Players in Europe

American Players in Europe

Tim HowardTim Howard (Everton – ENG) – An own goal from Tony Hibbart spoiled Tim’s clean sheet in London this weekend. He had 4 saves, and looks stronger than ever after a shaky start to the season.

Brad Friedel (Aston Villa – ENG) – Villa only gave up one goal in their 5-1 win over Bolton. Friedel had 5 goals and was comfortable in goal. Villa currently hold fifth place, one point behind the final Champions League spot.

Troy Perkins (Vålerenga – NOR) – Vålerenga’s season ended November 1st. They placed 7th with Troy as their first choice goalkeeper.

Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96 - GER) - Steve played the full 90 in a 2-2 draw against Hamburg SV. Steve has cemented his spot as the Reds RB, and is in charge of the defense as the 2nd captain on the field. Currently Hannover sits in 10th, and will face a tough Shalke 04 squad away in their next league match up.

Carlos Bocanegra (Stade Rennes - FRA) – Rennes lost to Toulouse 3-2 this weekend, with Carlos playing 66 minutes. Toulouse led for most of the match, but Abdou Kader Mangane gave Rennes a chance with 6 minutes left in the game. They could not equalize and fell to 13th in the table.

Clarence Goodson (IK Start - NOR) – IK Start’s season ended November 1st. Goodson featured in 20 games (out of 30), and was an integral part of the defense. IK ended the season in 9th place.

Jonathan Spector (West Ham – ENG) – Spector played the full match in a 2-1 loss to Everton. The loss puts the Hammers are in a familiar place in the bottom three. With only 3 points separating the next 4 highest clubs, the season is far from over for the club. They have shown that they can play (wonderful come back vs. Arsenal, W vs. Villa), but will have to get results in the upcoming weeks.

Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach – GER) – Bradley played the full 90 in a scoreless draw with Stuttgart. Borussia are currently in 14th place, only 3 points away from the drop zone. Everton

Clint Dempsey (Fulham – ENG) – Clint scored the game tying penalty kick in the 39th in his start against Wigan this weekend. It was his third of the season, and it was deserved as he was the one who was fouled in the box. The game, overshadowed by a top of the table clash, was very entertaining as a passing affair.

Benny Feilhaber (AGF – NOR) – AGF tied HB Køge this weekend, with the equalizer coming in the form of an own goal. Benny played the full game, and AGF currently sits in 7th.

Jozy Altidore (Hull City – ENG) – Jozy had good chances in his start for Hull this weekend. Missing narrowly on more than one occasion, he later gave way to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink who put in the game winner.

DaMarcus Beasley (Rangers FC - SCO) – Beasley came on as a sub at the half, and was the catalyst for the second goal in a win against St. Mirren. DeMarcus found Nacho Novo and he passed the ball across goal to a waiting Kris Boyd, who put in his second of the match. Rangers are now one point from the top, just behind leaders Celtic.

Mexican Players in Europe:

Hector Moreno (AZ Alkmaar – NED) – Moreno picked up a yellow card in a draw to Feyenoord over the weekend. Coming off of a 4-1 loss to the Gunners earlier in the week, Alkmaar was unable to grab the winner at home. This result drops the cup holders to a disappointing 8th place after 13 games. Moreno has provided great stability despite his youth, and will be sure to make an impact for AZ like he did last season.

Carlos SalcidoCarlos Salcido (PSV Eindhoven – NED) – Both Salcido and Maza played the full 90, giving up only one goal in a 5-1 win over ADO Den Haag. They have formed a fantastic partnership for PSV, and currently the team sits second in the table. Their defense has only given up 4 goals in their last 10 league games, out scoring opponents by 19 goals.

Francisco ‘Maza’ Rodríguez (PSV Eindhoven – NED) – See above

Andrés Guardado (Deportivo la Coruna – SPA) – Guardado played 85 minutes in a 0-2 away win against Getafe. A man down for the majority of the match, Depor still played well. They sit in 5th and will be fighting for a Champions League spot this season.

Guillermo Franco (West Ham – ENG) – Guille started his third game in a row for the hammers, and came up empty. His experience up front will help the London club, and he will be looking to get his second of the season vs. Hull in the next league fixture.
